There was a time when getting online meant finding a computer.
You sat at a desk, connected to the internet, did what you needed to do, and logged off. For businesses, digital access was often confined to specific systems, in many cases, specific people.
That world now feels ancient. Today, technology follows us everywhere. A customer can open an account without walking into a branch. Transactions happen in seconds, and information generated in one part of an organisation can influence decisions somewhere else.
The change has been enormous.
For CWG, 34 years in technology has meant growing alongside it and expanding what we build to meet changing business needs.
When technology moved beyond the computer
Early computing was about access. Businesses were beginning to see what computers could do for their operations. Then, the internet changed the scale of what was possible.
Mobile technology pushed that even further. Digital access moved from the desk into the hands of customers and employees, changing expectations along the way. People became accustomed to accessing services when they needed them, wherever they were.
And that environment generated something businesses would come to depend on heavily: data.
When data became part of the business
The more businesses moved online, the more information they began to generate. Transactions, customer interactions and day-to-day operations all created data that could be stored, analysed and used to understand what was happening inside the business.
Its growing value also raised new questions around how information was stored, protected and accessed, and whether the infrastructure supporting it could keep pace with the business. This is part of the reason technology conversations today extend well beyond the devices people use. A customer may see a simple payment confirmation on a screen, but behind it are applications, databases, networks, and infrastructure working together.
And CWG grew with the need
CWG's own evolution reflects that shift.
We started with computers and hardware. As technology became more central to how businesses operated, our capabilities grew with it. Today, our work spans data centres, cloud, enterprise systems, smart metering and financial technology, among other areas.
The expansion into financial technology through Fifthlab is another part of that journey. Solutions such as FinEdge, SMERP, UCP and KuleanPay serve different needs across banking, business management and digital financial services.
What connects these areas is the changing role of technology in business. Organisations now rely on much more than a device or a single system. They need the infrastructure to support critical operations, the platforms to run them and the technology to serve customers better. That is a significant distance from where we started, and it reflects a simple reality: as businesses change, what they need from technology changes with them.
Technology became part of the business
This may be the biggest shift of the last 34 years.
Technology once sat largely in the background, supporting how people worked. Today, it can shape how customers interact with a business, how quickly transactions happen, how information is managed, and how well an organisation can keep operating through disruption.
For businesses, decisions about infrastructure, data, cloud and enterprise systems now affect operations, customer experience, and growth.
For CWG, that has meant continually looking beyond the technology itself to understand what businesses need it to make possible.
Looking ahead
Artificial intelligence, automation, connected technologies, and sophisticated digital infrastructure are already changing the next set of possibilities in technology.
We cannot know exactly what the next 34 years will bring. But our journey has shown us that technology will keep changing, and businesses will keep finding new ways to use it.
CWG has grown from a business centred on computers and hardware into a broader technology group because the world around technology kept moving.
We’re excited to keep moving with it.
Happy 34th Anniversary, CWG Plc.
